Dr. Muhammad Ghanem, bariatric and general surgeon in Orlando Florida performs and narrates a gastric sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy) weight loss surgery procedure.
The gastric sleeve is the most popular bariatric surgery in the United States and represents a purely restrictive procedure. This means that the mechanism of weight loss is a result of the shrinking of the stomach pouch. Approximately 70 to 75% of the existing stomach pouch is removed from the abdomen. The fundus of the stomach is also removed, which reduces the production of ghrelin in the body, and as a result, most gastric sleeve patients feel fewer hunger pangs after surgery.
This procedure is performed robotically, which utilizes the da Vinci Surgical Robot. The robot does not perform the procedure autonomously. Rather, Dr. Ghanem has full control over the robotic arms while seated as a console near the operating table. Robotic bariatric surgery allows for greater dexterity, better visualization of the surgical field and more precise movements within the abdomen versus traditional laparoscopy.
Expected weight loss varies between patients and their willingness and ability to follow the postoperative bariatric diet and exercise requirements. However, most patients lose between 60 and 75% of their excess body weight.
The entire procedure requires between 45 minutes and one hour of operative time. Most patients will remain in the hospital for one night after which they will return home on a liquid diet. This will slowly progress to a normalized diet and activity regimen after approximately 4 to 6 weeks.
