**This is Footage of An Actual Surgery**
Dr. Forrest Ringold, bariatric and general surgeon at Surgical Association of Mobile, PA or SAMPA performs and narrates a gastric sleeve procedure. During the gastric sleeve, approximately 75 to 80% of the stomach is cut away and removed from the abdomen.
Originally, the sleeve was the first part of a two stage procedure known as a duodenal switch. However, it quickly became apparent that the gastric sleeve alone was very effective for weight loss and obesity-related disease improvement in qualified patients. As such, today, the gastric sleeve is the most popular bariatric surgery in the United States.
Of note, this procedure was the first in Alabama to use the new Titan SGS stapling device. Typically, a gastric sleeve is performed using a relatively small stapling device, requiring multiple overlapping staple firings to fully divide the stomach. The Titan device, made by Standard Bariatrics in Cincinnati instead allows for the division and sealing of the stomach with one single staple firing.
